Well done Kate! ******************************************************************Matthew Davies is a 20-year-old apprentice, currently in the full-time employment of Moreton Morell trainer, George Baker. Matthew originally hails from the village of Prestbury, Gloucestershire, which is famous as the home of Prestbury Park, otherwise known as Cheltenham Racecourse, and the National Hunt festival held in March each year. Despite his obvious National Hunt pedigree, however, Matthew learnt to ride at the British Racing School at Newmarket, and rides on the Flat, with a minimum weight of 7st 13lbs. Like Grand National winning jockey, Liam Treadwell, Matthew is sponsored by Dever Saddlery Ltd., the bridlework and saddlery company run by former National Hunt jockey, Peter Dever. The company provides bridles, reins, etc., saddles and accessories, including for racing, to retail outlets up and down the country. Career & Future Prospects Now in his third season, Matthew is still used by his former employer, Mick Channon, on a regular basis, and also by Alan Jarvis, Mark Johnston and William Haggas, who are happy to take advantage of his 5lb claim. In fact, Matthew has already ridden a winner in the colours of the Cheveley Park Stud for William Haggas at Doncaster this season. Matthew deserves much credit for that win, because his mount showed signs of greenness, drifting right in the closing stages, and losing ground in doing so. Like all other apprentices on the Flat, Matthew is entitled to claim a weight allowance to compensate for his lack of experience in comparison to fully licensed jockeys. In his first season, in 2007, Matthew rode 7 winners, finished second 11 times and third 8 times, from 98 rides, accruing total prize money of £49,611. He bettered that total in 2008, with 9 wins and 33 places from 156 rides, for total prize money of £56,436, and in the 2009 season, to date, he has already ridden 5 winners and been placed 26 times, accruing £29,900 in win and place prize money. In fact, his win on the Alan Jarvis trained Another Try at Lingfield on 13th June was something of a milestone in Matthew`s career, for it also marked the reduction of his claim, from 7lb to 5lb, as a result of riding 20 career winners. That win again exemplified Matthew`s riding skill, and strength in a finish, for, having raced prominently in the early stages, Another Try was slightly outpaced at halfway, before being hard ridden to regain the advantage inside the final furlong. Matthew has another 30 winners to ride before his claim is reduced to 3lb, and another 75, in total, before he rides out his claim altogether. He is a capable young rider who looks certain to add to his winning tally in the months, and years, to come. Those who follow horse racing know that there is no such thing as a sure-fire http://www.freeracingtips.co.uk/">horse racing betting tip, but my advice would be to follow Matthew Davies` career very closely, because he could turn out to be a future champion. ![]() |
