Small but essential piece of equipment for keeping race reins together and in line with the mouth. The Irish martingale is usefull in preventing the reins from being pulled over the horse's head in the event of a fall.  It can also be usefull for horses who have a habit of suddenly tossing their heads in the air, resulting in the reins being thrown over their heads.
